Peter Bourke

My coaching philosophy is to help athletes in attaining their fullest potential based on their commitment and ability, and within the rules of safety and fairplay.

Peter is an experienced athlete who has completed numerous sporting events from 5k races, sprint triathlons to marathons and ironmans. He has studied and practiced many different theories while training and in racing and has learned many lessons the hard way so you don't have too!. He is passionate about triathlon and passing his experiences and knowledge onto others. He has learned over the years that success is not always about training and racing hard but training and racing smart.

Having recently completed the requirements for Level 1 Triathlon NZ accreditation Peter is following the coaching guidelines of Triathlon New Zealand and the coaching ethics of SPARC. As head coach of Racesmart he provides personalized training programs, mentoring, and one-on-one coaching in all three triathlon disciplines. Racesmart specializes in guiding teenagers and adults in Sprint, Standard,Olympic, Half Ironman and Ironman distances.

If you are a complete beginner or an athlete looking to be more competitive you too can learn to racesmart.

If you need extra help in certain areas then Racesmart can refer you to sports professionals in podiatry, physiotherapy, nutrition and massage as required. Based in Wellington Racesmart can show you locations that are ideal for sea swimming, off-road running and safe cycling.

Racesmart offers training programs nationwide and is intending to facilitate triathlon clinics in provincial towns and major cities.

The most common mistakes made by triathletes

   1. Increasing training volume too quickly.

   2. Ignoring stretching and injury prevention.

   3. Relying on technology instead of technique and skills.

   4. Spending too much time on your strongest leg instead of working on your weakest.

   5. Avoiding speed work.

   6. Using training hard as an excuse to eat and drink whatever you like.

   7. Not taking time to rest and recover.

   8. Training at too high an intensity.

   9. Not having a coach planning an integrated, balanced training program.

  10. Copying the "secrets" of champions.
